The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 in overtime in Super Bowl LVIII, but the hero of the game apparently didn’t know the victory was secured.

After Mecole Hardman caught the game-winning three-yard touchdown pass, star quarterback Patrick Mahomes said on NFL Network that the veteran receiver didn’t realize he won the game.

“Can I tell a quick funny story? I threw a touchdown to this dude to end the game, and he had no idea,” Mahomes said, with his arm around Hardman (h/t Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk). “I said, ‘Dude, we just won the Super Bowl.’ He had no idea. He didn’t even celebrate at the beginning.”

In Hardman’s defense, this was the first game played under the new playoff overtime rules where both teams are guaranteed to possess the ball even if a touchdown is scored on the opening drive.

For his part, Hardman said he “blacked out” the moment he caught the game-winning touchdown from Mahomes and he admitted he initially didn’t realize what was going on until he saw his quarterback celebrating.

Now, they will have the chance to celebrate their second straight Super Bowl title and third in the last five years with their championship parade scheduled for Wednesday.
