Rob Manfred has been MLB’s Commissioner since January 2015.

It’s fair to say that his time in charge has been filled with controversy.

To say he hasn’t done anything positive would be unfair: the rule changes he implemented last year (bigger bases, the pitch clock, and the shift restrictions) brought renewed interest to the game, for example.

However, many people feel he didn’t handle the Houston Astros sign-stealing scandal, the pandemic, and the lockout well enough, or the Oakland Athletics’ relocation saga for that matter.

Perhaps more than ever, there is animosity between owners, players, and fans.

Nevertheless, Manfred was re-elected as Commissioner in 2023, for his third term.

It will also be his final one.

“MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred reiterates that he will step down as commissioner in January, 2029, after his 5-year term expires,” MLB insider Bob Nightengale tweeted.

The vast majority of fans reacting to the news couldn’t hide their happiness.

Normally, the Commissioner responds to the owners’ interests, so it is likely that whoever follows Manfred’s footsteps also has some clashes with the MLB Players Association.

Hopefully, however, the person who succeeds him keeps in mind that the game is for the fans, and nobody else.

They are the ones keeping it all alive and well.

Fans have spoken: they don’t want to deal with Manfred for another term.
